Economic Development - MCCAdams Grant Task Force

Starburst Packaging

NOTES Subcommittee meeting 8/8/06

Judge Welsh Room, Town Hall

Present:  Judy Cicero/Chamber, Michelle Jarusiewicz/Acting Asst Town Manager/Grant Administrator, Bill Schneider/Administrative Director of Tourism, Hersh Schwartz/VSB, Hunter O’Hanian/FAWC, Cherie Mittenthal/Castle Hill, Lisa Bowden/Cultural Development Coordinator

Flyer: Staff recommended the production and distribution of a flyer targeting the off-season and the cultural attractions – “See you in September and beyond” – to be available during Carnival week. Discussion resulted in using a tag-line previously used in Provincetown – “Let’s be more than just summer friends!”  The flyer will include language to encourage the visitor to return in the off-season, a calendar of events, and photos representing the arts and cultural organizations. Given the short turnaround, staff will be working with the town’s graphic consultant to design. The mock-up will then be distributed to subcommittee and task force members for review.

Website: Staff will develop an RFP for web-site development as previously discussed which allows all licensed and permitted entities to be listed and allows the visitor to self-select and create their own package.

Give-away: Some discussion about incentive  -- the boxer/toothbrush/tee-shirt idea to promote staying in Provincetown; could be a gift bag or a beach bag such as the one used by the Tourism office or in a sand pail with Provincetown on the exterior.

Packaging Workshop: The Administrative Director of Tourism will explore presenting a workshop on packaging for businesses. The Cultural Development Coordinator will inventory existing packaging relationships between the arts organizations and businesses – what works? What needs improvement? Discussion about how to make connections to workers in town  -- the primary points of information for the visitor. Potential for 1 page informational “what’s going on” “pillow” document for weekly distribution – could be done electronically; hotels and B&Bs could then print for distribution in each room or at counter or as they see fit. Perhaps starting in September. Also discussion  about the need for customer service training.

Next steps: Staff will develop flyer, draft RFP, one-page informational sheet, look at give-aways.
